Floodlights on at Lords at 11 in morning! @homeofcricker
This music will be instantly recognisable to any of you who have seen the TV show 'Curb Your enthusiasm' but I think it is a great tune in its own right! And performed with panache by its composer. It sounds like it should come from a bygone era, but instead accompanies the toe-curling, cringing exploits of Larry David in his crazy LA media world.
By the time this is posted, I will be trying my best to cycle round Perthshire, probably in some heavy rain and gale force winds - the Etape Caledonia. As those of you who have read my training blogs will know, it has been fun, but hard work and this will be the big test! So I have chosen a song that inspires me to go faster and which creates a sense of movement and, well... whoooosh!!!
Brilliant Joe Satriani, guitar master, has tutored such luminaries as Kirk Hamster of Metallica and Steve Vai of... Steve Vai. His breakthrough album (also called Surfing With The Alien) was one of the first albums I thought 'now that would sound great on one of these new CDs' because it sounded so clean, crisp and modern. He has never compromised (in other words, never had a hit) but has continued to churn out great tunes, even though his singing leaves a bit to be desired.
I've been lucky enough to see him a few times - Edinburgh Playhouse for The Extremist Tour, Glasgow SECC for 'Is There Love In Space' and Birmingham NEC with Steve Vai and Robert Fripp as G3. Awesome, every one. So here's to Satch and surfin'.
Well, following quite a long hiatus (10 years), piano-playing songster Ben Folds and his Five are back with new material and a tour to boot! I like his jangly piano, funny lyrics and cheeky chappy singing, particularly his songs about angry dwarfs/ves. This new tune sounds good, and I for one, will be trying to get to one of his gigs. Who's in?
